What Does It Mean That We Are All One?
I wrote this text to share what I have come to understand about being one with the whole: one with everyone and everything, in a deep connection that goes beyond the separation we perceive. This understanding settled in me mainly through a dream I had not long ago. In the dream, I was somewhere surrounded by people, and I could clearly feel that I was them and they were me. There was no division. We were all one, feeling each other, understanding everything about one another, and existing in complete oneness.
It Begins Within
Being one with the whole begins within. It starts with a sacred meeting with yourself, where awareness gathers like a flame at the center of your being.
Sit in silence. Close your eyes and become still. The first step is this sacred return to yourself, because before you can know the vastness, you need to know your own being. Who are you? Not your name, your body or your mind, but the presence that watches, the awareness that witnesses everything. Feel this presence within you. Sense the energy moving through your body, the breath flowing in and out, the stillness at your core. Watch your thoughts rise and fall like waves on the ocean, and your emotions pass like clouds across the sky. See how everything moves, while you remain: the witness, the One who doesn't change.
Then let your awareness expand. Like ripples spreading from a single drop in a pond, your consciousness moves outward. What was contained within the boundary of your body now stretches beyond it, into the world around you.
Becoming the Tree
Go to a tree. Look at it, and truly see it. Notice how it stands, silent yet alive, deeply rooted yet reaching toward the sky. Feel its presence and let its energy enter you. Then shift, and become the tree. Let your consciousness move into its form. Feel the weight of its roots holding the earth, the stillness of its trunk, the gentle whisper of its leaves dancing in the wind.
Just as you know your hand is part of you, even though it isn't all of you, now feel that the tree is part of you. It isn't "you," but it belongs to the deeper You, the You beyond name and form, the You that is awareness itself.
Now let yourself be seen by the tree. Feel it looking at you. In this sacred moment, know the truth: the tree isn't separate from you. You are the tree, and the tree is you. Let it witness you as you witness it, and connect, knowing that you are one.
This is how the illusion dissolves. You begin to see that the world isn't outside of you; the world is within you. Everything exists inside your consciousness. What you call the outside world appears as form within your own awareness. The sky, the sun, the air, the people: none of them are separate from you, just as your hand isn't separate from your body.
The Hand and the Body
Your hand isn't "you," and yet it is part of you. You don't say "I am my finger," yet you know your finger belongs to you; it moves with you and exists because you exist. This is the key to understanding oneness. In the same way, the tree is one with you, the sky is one with you, and the people around you are one with you. They aren't "you" as you usually perceive yourself, but they are part of the greater You: your awareness, your being.
Now take this understanding further. Just as your hand is part of your body, you are part of something vaster. You are part of God.
God is everything: the totality, the infinite consciousness that contains all things. And within that vastness, you exist. You aren't separate from God, yet you aren't the totality of God either. You are a fractal of God, a piece that carries the whole within it, the way a single drop of water holds the essence of the ocean.
And because you are a fractal of God, everything that exists within God also exists within you. Just as everything you perceive lives inside your awareness, everything that exists lives inside the awareness of God.
That is why, when you connect deeply with something, a tree, the wind or another person, you feel its essence within you. When you practice this exercise with the tree, you aren't imagining something false. You are touching a fundamental truth: the tree isn't "you," but it is part of your awareness, part of the real You, the awareness that goes beyond a single identity, a single lifetime, a single form. And just as the tree is within you, you are within God. Everything is within us, and we are within God.
Living It
This realization isn't only intellectual; it is meant to be felt and lived. When you look at the sky, breathe the air or touch the earth beneath your feet, you aren't simply interacting with something outside of you. You are recognizing a part of yourself.
And in that recognition, something profound happens: the illusion of separation dissolves. You no longer need to struggle to become one with anything, because you see that you already are. You always were, and you always will be.
When you sit in presence with yourself, feeling your body, your breath, your thoughts and your sensations, you step into awareness of the whole. And when you expand beyond your body, your mind and your sense of "I," you merge into the great ocean of being, the infinite awareness that holds us all.
You are not alone, and you are not apart. You are, and God is.
