Why Do Difficult Things Happen to Us? Suffering as a Path to Spiritual Awakening

Why do difficult things happen to us? Before answering, I want to look at something more basic. Most of us move through life in a kind of sleep. We wake up in the morning, go through our routines, chase after what we think we need, react to the world around us, and go back to sleep, only to repeat the same cycle the next day. But are we really awake? Do we really see who we are?

Living Asleep, and Beginning to Wake Up

Most human beings live in a state of unconsciousness, a deep slumber of the soul, lost in our conditioned minds, in our stories, in our fears and desires. Some of us, though, have begun to wake up. And what does waking up mean? It means seeing beyond illusions, beyond the surface of things, beyond the identity we were told we are. It means remembering.

Awakening is not an easy process, and it is rarely gentle. It shakes us and pulls apart the structures we built to keep ourselves comfortable, because comfort doesn't push us to change. When we are at ease, we settle in and remain as we are. Growth and transformation require movement, and that movement very often comes from discomfort.

Suffering as a Teacher

For most of us, suffering is the great teacher, the alarm clock that jolts us out of our sleep. When everything is going well and we are safe in our little cocoons, there is no urgency to look deeper. But when suffering arrives, when loss comes, when betrayal cuts us, when illness knocks at our door, we suddenly begin to ask the deeper questions, and we begin to seek.

The Butterfly and the Chrysalis

There is a story often told about a butterfly that seems to struggle as it pushes its way out of the chrysalis. Someone who wants to help cuts the chrysalis open, and the butterfly comes out too soon, without the strength to fly. Whether or not nature works exactly this way, the image speaks to something true in us: what seems painful is sometimes the very thing that prepares us for life.

Our struggles can build the wings we need. They strip away the illusions, the false identities and the smallness we have believed in for so long, and they ask us to grow beyond who we thought we were.

The Dark Night of the Soul

Some of us wake up through small struggles: a moment of sadness, a quiet realization, a longing for something more. For many, awakening requires something deeper, something that shakes the very foundation of our being. This is what is called the dark night of the soul, the place where everything crumbles, where we feel abandoned, lost and broken beyond repair. And it is often in that darkness, in that unbearable pain, that the greatest openings happen.

So what at first seems like a curse, like suffering or loss, can be grace in disguise. It can be a doorway to something greater, the hand of the divine not pushing us down but pulling us up, urging us to remember.

A Collective Awakening

I believe we are in the midst of a great awakening, not only as individuals but as a collective. Some of us are taking our first steps, while others have walked the path before and now extend their hands to those who are just beginning. This is how it has always been, and as each of us wakes up, we help the world wake up too.

So why do difficult things happen to us? I believe it is because we are being called, invited to remember, prepared for something far greater than the small lives we have settled for. Pain is not the enemy, and neither is struggle. They are the hands that shape us, refine us and make us ready.

One day, we may look back and see that every hardship, every heartbreak, every moment we thought we could not survive was also grace: life waking us up, and love calling us home.
